The Wayland Academy Fine Arts Department is excited to announce our Fall Ensemble Concert, Studio Recital, and the 57th Annual Lessons and Carols service.
The 2022 Fall Ensemble Concert features the Concert Band, Concert Choir, and Unaccompanied Minors—Wayland Academy’s contemporary a cappella choir. All three groups have started the year strongly, working on music for the concert as well as developing and refining their skills. Concert Band is under the direction of Amy Throndsen H`14 while Andrew Estervig directs Concert Choir and Unaccompanied Minors. Concert Choir is accompanied by Wayland Academy’s piano instructor Kristie Estervig. The concert Fall Ensemble Concert is Wednesday, October 12 at 7:00 pm in Kimberly Chapel and is open to the Wayland Community including parents, families, and alumni.
The Fall Studio Recital features students taking private music lessons. Wayland offers private lessons in piano, voice, guitar, drums, wind, and string instruments. This semester we are teaching more than 50 private lessons each week. The recital is a chance for private-lesson students to perform for the Wayland Community. The recital is Tuesday, November 15 at 10:10 am in Kimberly Chapel.
One of the longest-standing traditions at Wayland is our Lessons and Carols Service. The service was last performed live in December 2019. Covid forced the performance online in 2020. A live performance was planned for 2021 but had to be canceled at the last minute because of Covid-related issues. We are hopeful and excited to have a live performance in 2022. This will be the 57th year of Lessons and Carols. The service is based on the original King’s College service dating back to 1918. The storytelling of the service is interspersed with the singing of Christmas carols, hymns, and choral music. The service is Sunday, December 11 at 4:00 pm in Kimberly Chapel and is free and open to the public.
We hope to see you at these performances. If you are unable to attend, plan to tune in to the livestream performances. Details regarding the live stream will be available soon.
Thank you for your support of Wayland Fine Arts. We are excited for a wonderful year!
Fall Family Weekend at Wayland is almost here. Make plans to join us October 14–16, 2022 for an in-person weekend of events highlighting everything that makes the Wayland experience special.
We can't wait to welcome families to campus to connect with their students and the Wayland community. Fall Family Weekend has something for everyone.
Also, don't miss the opportunity to schedule time with your student's teachers. Watch for emails from your student's teachers inviting you to schedule individual meetings with them (through Calendly).
It is time to start thinking about your student's transportation for Thanksgiving and Winter Breaks!
Your student received TWO surveys today via email. One is for Thanksgiving plans, the other is for Winter Break plans. They are required to fill out both!
If your student plans to stay with a host family, you AND the host both need to send an email to Ms. Rinshed to officially give permission.
Your student's travel plans for BOTH Thanksgiving and Winter breaks are due to Ms. Rinshed on Friday, October 21.
If your student is going to fly on an airplane for the breaks, they MUSTfly out of Chicago O’Hare. Wayland will not be offering transportation to and from Milwaukee airport for breaks any longer. Also, if you buy a plane ticket, please forward the ticket by email to Ms. Rinshed at krinshed@wayland.org. She does not want a screenshot of the flight you are purchasing; she needs the actual email from the airline with the flight number, date, time, etc.
If your student lives in the Chicago area, they can take the Wayland bus to O’Hare and you can pick them up at the airport.
New this year: If travel plans are not turned in to Ms. Rinshed by October 21, a charge of $25 will be placed on your student's account as a late fee.

Cross Country—The Wayland Cross Country team is off to a great start with excellent performances in early-season meets. The team is led by Captains Drew Benson `23 and Jasper Roetter Gresback `23. Newcomers Nelson Mitchell `25, Sam Porras `25, William Goodman `24, and Luca Roetter Gresback `26 have made the boys’ varsity squad very deep. The girls’ side features returner Maria Jose Acon `24, who continues to pursue the school record in the 5K, and newcomers Griyan Hughland `26, Lilly Westergaard `26, and Vicky Ezeh `24.
Senior Day for cross country will take place on Saturday, October 15 during the Fall Family Weekend and Alumni Homecoming Fun Run event!
Volleyball—The Wayland Volleyball program added many new athletes this year and is proud to have teams at the Varsity, JV, and JV2 levels. We are grateful to have so many new athletes in volleyball who are extremely enthusiastic and competitive. The varsity team is led by captains Saniah Wright `23 and Dani Espinoza `24, who have encouraged their teammates to perform to their fullest potential. We play in a strong conference and are lucky to compete against great opponents as we head into a busy and competitive stretch of the season.
Girls Tennis—The Wayland Tennis program has grown to include over twenty-five students filling Varsity and Junior Varsity rosters. Lu McGuinness `24 with her 4-1 record this season and flawless sets from Lotus Buss `24 lead the varsity team to their first victory against Columbus High School. Wayland hosted the JV Championship this year, where Dalia Alcala Olalla ’24 took first place in singles. Wayland Academy will be hosting the Varsity Sub-sectionals Tuesday, October 4. We look forward to building on our successes through the season and growing the tennis program with our talented young athletes.
Rowing—Our co-ed crew entered our first-ever competition Sunday, September 11, taking third place in driving rain and cold temperature in Jefferson, Wisconsin. The Wisco Chase regatta was in its first year and it was a wonderful event! Ava Loppnow `24 rowed in a single and was pleased with her first performance, as well. The Big Red Rowers also competed Saturday, September 17 in Milwaukee at the Milwaukee River Challenge. Our first all-girls 4 with coxswain raced in the Junior 4’s race and our all-boys 8 competed in the Junior 8’s race. The venue was held at Schlitz Park.
Boys Soccer—The boys varsity soccer team has not suffered from a paucity of goal-scoring in the early season, but unfortunately has yet to notch its first win of the season. In the home opener, seniors Marc DeRamos `23, Ugur Can `23, and Emre Kocer `23 all netted goals, but the Big Red fell to conference-leading Winnebago Lutheran Academy, 5-3. The season continued with a trip to traditional foe St. Lawrence Seminary before returning home to welcome Aquinas to Cobb Field.
The JV team features a hardy group of young players gaining competitive experience. In their first contest, the squad surrendered a late goal in a 1-0 loss to Watertown Luther Prep before playing evenly in a scrimmage with Winnebago Lutheran. The JV was also in action vs. Aquinas last Saturday morning.
Senior Day for soccer will take place during Fall Family Weekend on Saturday, October 15 during the home game vs. Brookfield Academy!
